The best pubs with rooms for a truly Yorkshire stay when this is all over
"The cheerful Wensleydale Heifer is an attractive 17th-century inn, situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and surrounded by pretty countryside. There are 13 rooms, nine with traditional décor in the original building and four themed rooms in a newer annexe across the courtyard. The latter may not be to everyone’s taste but they are nothing if not original: Chocolate Heaven has a cherub-heavy mural above the bath, the James Herriot comes with a box set of All Creatures Great and Small, and Night At the Movies, has black walls, a vaulted beamed ceiling and silver furniture."

"Situated in one of the most beautiful areas of the country, in the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park, is probably the finest fish restaurant in the Dales, The Wensleydale Heifer. Located in West Witton, around a 20 minute drive through some spectacular scenery from Sun Hill, The Heifer is one of our favourite places to eat. Boasting a menu full of luxury classics such as steak and lobster, through to their famous Fish and Chips, posh sandwiches and light bite tapas for lunch - there’s something for everyone whether they prefer fine dining or a casual meal."

The Best Pubs in the Yorkshire Dales
"Possibly the best known pub in the Yorkshire Dales, thanks to its status as the highest inn in the British Isles, the Tan Hill is popular with hikers, providing overnight accommodation for those walking longer trails. Dating back to the 17th Century, the inn was originally used as a place to rest for the local coal pit workers and although it has changed hands many times over the years, it has retained its charm. During the winter months the fire is always lit, providing a cosy spot to sit and rest with a pint of ale while making friends with like-minded folk."

Also, quite incredibly, Greta Garbo stayed here in 1942 after an evening entertaining the troops at Catterick Garrison."

"This whitewashed, three-storey coaching inn dates back to the 17th century, all well-trodden flagged flooring, low-beamed ceilings and old-fashioned wooden settles. Exploring North Yorkshire’s parish churches, keepers of history
"We were on our way to Malhamdale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, about an hour north and a bit west of Leeds, when we spotted a church tower in the rural community of Kirkby Malham and decided to take a look. What we found was a charming 15th-century parish church nestled in a churchyard on a side lane in a community too small even for the designation of “village.” The church, however, serves a large parish of 37 square miles. Entering the church, we noticed a small, modern statue of St. Michael located in a niche above the entrance."
