"Located at the south western extremity of the New Forest, Hurst Castle also stands on a spit of land and was another Device Fort built in 1544 as part of King Henry VIII’s coastal defence chain. It was the perfect location to defend the western approach to the Solent, lying just three quarters of a mile from the Isle of Wight and subject to strong tidal flows to catch the unwary. The original castle was circular and  had a portcullis and a drawbridge over a moat."

"Unveiled in 2009 as “a beacon of hope”, the RNLI Memorial honours those lost at sea while saving the lives of others – allowing them to be named and remembered together. The memorial is a constant reminder of the risk, heroism and sacrifice that is offered by lifeboat crew members, lifeguards and supporters every day. It acts as a source of inspiration and motivation for potential new members."

"This memorial is dedicated to the brave and selfless lifeboat and rescue crews who have volunteered acts of heroism in order to save others. The memorial is not only designed to honor local crews, but also others in local communities, and this is the only place where they are all named together. "On the east side of the town, Thomas Hardy (also a trained architect) designed and built this large house in 1885 and resided here until he passed away in 1928. At Max Gate Hardy wrote his best known later works like Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891), Jude the Obscure (1894) and The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), as well as most of his poetry. The house was donated to the National Trust by Hardy’s sister on the proviso that it be lived in, and Max Gate has been occupied ever since."
